Yadkinville Winery
Situated in the rural landscape of Yadkin Valley, North Carolina, the winery attempts to blur the boundary between building and site. The architectures seems to emerge out of the earth, not as a man-made intervention, but as an elemental form as old as the wine-making process itself. The winery is oriented parallel to the grain of the existing vineyards, creating a linear experience for both the visitors and employees of the winery. The visitor’s narrative begins on a pathway through a series of viewing portals into the fermentation room below. The field of view is slowly contracted as the visitor descends into the earth on a ramp that runs alongside a single row of barrels. Ascending into the tasting room, the view is focused on a single oculus directed towards the heavens. As the visitor exits the tasting room and traverses back across the site, the field of view expands. The experience ends on the rooftop terrace that overlooks the vineyards, revealing the source of the wine that is manufactured within the building.
