(Sweet) Tea House
The (Sweet) Tea House is a Southern interpretation of a Japanese tea house commissioned by the Hodges + Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina for an exhibition entitled "Interpreting Wabi Sabi." The design for the tea house is based on a procession that takes the visitor alongside a wall of Mason jars filled with sweet tea. The visitor removes a jar and enters the center of the structure, where an ice bucket has replaced the traditional Japanese hearth. Once the visitor finishes drinking the tea, the empty Mason jar is put back in its place on the wall. The repetition of this ritual allowed the visitors to watch the tea house transform over the course of the opening.
